Lemon pepper mushroom popcorn with BOBLAH seasoning and branded bowl
Serving illustration; check the seasoning label for its actual ingredients.

Lemon pepper popcorn brings a citrus-style flavour and a peppery touch to a snack you can season your own way. For an easy home version, pop the kernels first and gradually toss dry seasoning through the warm popcorn. You can adjust the flavour without soaking the entire bowl in lemon juice.

This recipe uses BOBLAH Lemon & Pepper Seasoning 50g with premium jumbo mushroom popcorn kernels. “Mushroom” describes the popped shape; it does not mean the corn tastes like mushrooms.

Lemon pepper popcorn ingredients

  • ¼ cup raw popcorn kernels, or a small batch suited to your pot and the package directions.
  • About 1 tablespoon suitable cooking oil as a trial starting point, following the kernel instructions.
  • BOBLAH Lemon & Pepper Seasoning, added in small sprinkles to taste.
  • A deep pot with a suitable lid and a large mixing bowl.

Do not automatically add extra salt. Read the seasoning ingredients and taste first. Lemon slices and peppercorns in the image are serving props, not a complete ingredient declaration. Check the product label for ingredients and allergy information.

How to make lemon pepper popcorn

  1. Start dry: put the oil and two test kernels in a dry pot. Cover and heat over medium heat without letting the oil smoke.
  2. Add the kernels: when the test kernels pop, carefully add the remainder in a suitable layer. Leave expansion room and cover.
  3. Distribute heat: gently shake occasionally with the lid secure, using suitable oven mitts. Stay close and listen.
  4. Stop at the right time: remove from heat when popping slows to roughly one pop every two seconds.
  5. Transfer: let popping settle, open away from your face and transfer to a wide bowl. Discard unpopped kernels.
  6. Sprinkle, toss and taste: add a little seasoning and lift popcorn from the bottom of the bowl as you mix. Taste before increasing it.

These are trial quantities rather than a fixed formula for every pot. Note the amount you enjoy so you can repeat it. If preparing for guests, see the popcorn portion guide before scaling up.

Dry seasoning or fresh lemon juice?

Start with dry seasoning when crispness is your priority. Too much liquid can soften some pieces and leave unevenly flavoured patches. If you enjoy fresh lemon, try a few drops on a separate small portion and serve straight away. Test before pouring it over the full batch.

Dry seasoning and lemon juice are different approaches. Adding a lot of both, then more salt to compensate, makes the flavour harder to control. Aim for a balance where the corn’s own taste still comes through.

How to distribute lemon pepper seasoning evenly

Choose a bowl with room for tossing. Add seasoning in two or three light rounds rather than one heavy pile. If most of it falls to the bottom, try a very light mist of suitable oil on the cooked popcorn, toss and season again. You do not need a visibly oily coating.

Test a handful before seasoning the whole batch. For more detail, read how to make popcorn seasoning stick, or the popcorn oil guide if you are choosing your cooking oil.

Three serving ideas

  • A snack for two: use individual cups so each person can choose their seasoning strength.
  • A flavour tasting: split one plain batch between bowls, then season separately with lemon pepper, cheddar or barbecue.
  • A family sharing bowl: serve in a wide bowl with individual cups, keeping some plain popcorn aside.

Lemon pepper popcorn questions

Is it spicy?

The sensation depends on the product, amount and personal preference. Do not infer a precise heat level from the name. Start with a small sprinkle and check the label.

Should seasoning go in before popping?

In this recipe it goes in afterwards. That makes the flavour easier to adjust and keeps the powder away from direct heat at the bottom of the pot.

Should I use the whole 50g jar?

The jar weight is not a single-batch serving amount. Add according to the popcorn quantity, product directions and your taste. Close the jar after use.
