The best oil for popcorn is a cooking oil that suits your heat level and the flavour you enjoy. For a straightforward stovetop batch, try cooking-grade sunflower or canola oil when you want a relatively neutral taste. Corn, coconut and suitable olive oils are other options. There is no single winner for every kitchen: taste, quantity and temperature all matter.
Start with BOBLAH premium jumbo mushroom popcorn kernels and taste the first few pieces plain. That makes it easier to notice the corn’s own flavour before adding seasoning.
Choosing popcorn oil by the result you want
| Oil | Why try it? | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking-grade sunflower or canola | A relatively neutral starting point | The label should permit your cooking method |
| Corn oil | An alternative you may already keep at home | Compare it using the same kernel batch and quantity |
| Coconut oil | A different flavour experience | Refined and unrefined products may smell different |
| Olive oil | For people who enjoy its character | Its flavour may be noticeable; follow its heating instructions |
This is a guide to choosing by taste and convenience, rather than a health ranking or laboratory comparison. An expensive specialist bottle is not necessary for your first attempt. Use a suitable cooking oil, keep the batch small and work from there.
How much oil should you use?
Follow your kernel package first. For a small home trial, start with a quarter cup of kernels and one tablespoon of oil in a pot suited to that quantity. Adjust the next batch according to how evenly the oil spreads and the result you prefer. These are approximate trial amounts: the pot base and burner affect cooking.
Split an overcrowded batch instead of stacking more kernels in the pot. If the finished popcorn feels oily, slightly reduce the amount next time. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the difference came from the oil, heat or batch size.
Can butter replace oil for popping?
For this basic method, use suitable cooking oil for popping. Ordinary butter can burn under strong heat; add a little melted butter afterwards if desired. For another approach, see our sweet butter popcorn guide. Avoid soaking the popcorn simply to make it taste more buttery.
A simple oil comparison in your own kitchen
- Prepare a deep, dry pot with a suitable lid and secure handles.
- Warm the oil with two test kernels over medium heat. Do not wait for smoke.
- Once they pop, carefully add the remaining kernels, leaving expansion room, and cover.
- Gently shake occasionally with the lid secure, using suitable oven mitts.
- Remove from heat when popping slows to roughly two seconds between pops. Let it settle and open away from your face.
- Transfer to a wide bowl, discard unpopped kernels and taste before seasoning.
See the full stovetop popcorn method for preparation details. Oil is only one part of the result; heat control, batch size and steam release also deserve attention.
Why can popcorn still turn soft?
Review what happened after popping. Was it sealed while hot, or covered with a large amount of butter or sauce? Try a wide serving bowl and smaller additions. Our guide to making popcorn seasoning stick explains how to distribute flavour rather than leaving it at the bottom.
Popcorn oil questions
Can I use olive oil?
Yes, when the product is suitable for your cooking method. Control the heat and test a small batch because its taste may be noticeable. Do not let it smoke.
Will extra oil make mushroom popcorn bigger?
More oil does not guarantee larger or identical pieces. Kernel variety and preparation conditions affect the result; extra oil may simply make it greasy.
Can I pop without oil?
A purpose-built hot-air popcorn machine can do that when used according to its instructions. Do not put oil into an appliance whose manufacturer does not permit it.
