Sweet butter popcorn is an option for anyone who enjoys buttery flavour with a touch of sweetness. Pop the kernels first, then add seasoning in small amounts and taste as you go. You do not need to soak the popcorn in butter or use an entire seasoning jar for one batch.
Ingredients
- ¼ cup raw mushroom popcorn kernels, or a batch size suited to your pot and package instructions.
- 1–2 tablespoons suitable cooking oil, following the kernel instructions.
- BOBLAH Sweet Butter Seasoning, to taste.
- A deep pot with a suitable lid and a large mixing bowl.
A small amount of melted butter after popping is optional. The seasoning is a separate product: check its current ingredients and allergy information rather than inferring its contents from the flavour name.
How to make sweet butter popcorn
- Prepare the pot: heat the oil and two test kernels over medium heat with the lid on. Do not let the oil smoke.
- Add the kernels: once the test kernels pop, carefully add the rest in a suitable layer, leaving plenty of room for expansion, and replace the lid.
- Distribute the heat: use suitable oven mitts and gently shake the pot occasionally with the lid secure.
- Remove from heat: stop when popping slows to roughly one pop every two or three seconds.
- Transfer and season: let popping settle and open the lid away from your face. Transfer to the bowl, discard unpopped kernels, then add a little seasoning, toss and taste before adding more.
Should butter go in before or after popping?
This beginner-friendly method uses suitable cooking oil during popping and adds seasoning afterwards. Ordinary butter may burn when heated strongly. If you want melted butter, distribute a small amount lightly over warm popcorn in the serving bowl, then add seasoning gradually.
Thorough tossing matters more than adding lots of liquid. Add a little, mix, and repeat only if needed. If the flavour becomes too strong, combine it with some plain popcorn rather than adding more liquid.
How to keep popcorn crisp
- Transfer popcorn out of the covered pot so it does not sit in trapped steam.
- If using melted butter, distribute it lightly instead of pouring it onto one spot.
- Season after popping unless the product instructions say otherwise.
- Serve after preparation and cool any leftovers completely before sealing them in an airtight container.
How does this differ from caramel popcorn?
This recipe adds a dry seasoning to prepared popcorn. Caramel popcorn typically uses a cooked sugar coating and a different preparation method. A sprinkle of flavour seasoning will not create a hard caramel shell; choose the approach that matches the result you want.
Frequently asked questions
Should I add sugar or salt?
Start with seasoning alone, then taste. Check the product ingredients before making additions, rather than automatically adding sugar or salt. Your preferred amount depends on the batch size and personal taste.
Can I use air-popped popcorn?
Season after preparing popcorn according to your appliance instructions. If the flavour does not stick, try a very small amount of oil or melted butter after removing the popcorn from the machine. Do not add ingredients inside an appliance that does not permit them.
